Data classification in Atlassian products

The data classification feature lets an organization define classes for users to categorize their content into. These are typically created based on an established data classification policy in the organization. Each class is known as a classification level.

Situation

The data classifications feature is the cornerstone of Atlassian's new security offering. Recently, I was tasked with overseeing a design team that operated within a tenuous partnership with our engineering counterparts. To add to the complexity, a shift in senior design leadership occurred, ushering in a fresh perspective to guide the design direction at Atlassian.

Tasks

I was tasked to maintain development velocity, partner with Jira and Confluence to ensure scalability, rebuild trust with engineering partners, and uplift overall design quality.

Actions I took

Led team through

  • Health monitor

  • Established strong partnerships with Jira and Confluence

  • Served as positive mentor/coach to design team

  • Led team through multiple design gates

Results

The feature development remained on track, thanks to strong partnerships across the board. The design team has consistently been viewed as high-achieving, with senior design stakeholders praising the work as "portfolio-worthy."
